No, £48,000 is not a normal mechanic salary, and it is not a visa rule. Official pay data put the middle full-time mechanic at £38,042 a year, and £48,000 sits near the top quarter. The bigger issue is time. As of 4 November 2026, a new overseas mechanic can only be sponsored through a temporary list, and only if the employer issues the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) before 31 December 2026.
Last checked against official sources: October 2026.
1. The timeline at a glance
Most of the rules that affect mechanics changed within the last fifteen months. The chart below puts the dates in order. Solid dots are things that happened or are written into the rules. The hollow dot is something people expect, but the government has not announced it.
2. What is decided and what is only expected
People mix these two things up all the time. This table separates them.
| Item | Status | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanics on the current shortage list | Decided | Listed, but valid only if the CoS is issued before 31 Dec 2026 |
| Salary floor | Decided | £41,700 a year, or £33,400 for a new entrant |
| English at B2 | Decided | Required for new applicants since 8 Jan 2026 |
| Partner and children | Decided | A new overseas mechanic cannot bring them, except a child born in the UK |
| No access for mechanics from 2027 | Advice only | Committee view of 23 Jul 2026. The Home Office does not have to follow it |
| End of new mechanic sponsorship in 2027 | Expected, not announced | No government decision found on 4 Nov 2026 |
| Earned settlement, 10-year default | Announced | Published 2 Nov 2026. Not yet in force, no start date stated |
| Protection for people holding a certificate already | Unknown | Nothing found either way |
The honest reading is this. The route for mechanics is closing on current rules, and the advice for 2027 points the same way. But nobody outside the Home Office can say what it will do on 1 January. Plan for the door being shut, and treat anything else as a bonus.
3. What the 31 December cut-off means in practice
The rule looks at the date the CoS is issued, not the date you apply. A CoS is an electronic record with a reference number. The rule text says “before” 31 December 2026, so do not plan around the last day itself.
From 4 November there are about eight weeks left. In that time an employer has to hold a sponsor licence, offer you a real job, and issue the certificate. You then apply within three months of getting it. The standard decision time from outside the UK is three weeks, though checks can take longer.
One thing we could not confirm is whether the Home Office will add any protection for people who hold a certificate but apply after the cut-off. The rule as written follows the issue date. Ask a regulated adviser before you depend on that reading.
Timing check: an employer who says “the certificate can wait until January” is describing a plan the rules do not support today. Ask for the issue date in writing.
4. Where £48,000 fits against the official numbers
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) publishes pay for vehicle technicians and mechanics. Its April 2026 figures are provisional and include overtime and bonuses. Advertised pay is different. An advert saying “up to £48,000” often counts overtime.
| Figure | Amount | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time median pay | £38,042 | Half earn more, half earn less |
| Top quarter starts at | £47,424 | 75th percentile |
| £48,000 | About 76th percentile | Top quarter, not typical |
| Legal minimum, new hire | £41,700 | Visa rule for the shortage list |
| Legal minimum, new entrant | £33,400 | For example, under 26 at the date of application |
| Take-home on £48,000 | About £38,080 | After tax and National Insurance, England, 2026/27, before pension |
| Take-home on £38,042 | About £30,910 | Same method |
So £48,000 is above every legal minimum, but no rule asks for it. It is an employer offer. It is realistic mainly for senior roles such as heavy vehicle or master technicians, or for people who work a lot of overtime. No UK region has a median that high.
5. The conditions to meet before the clock runs out
Even with a real job offer, you must meet several conditions at once. The ones that catch people out are listed here.
- English at B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Nigeria is not on the exempt list, so you need an approved test or a qualifying degree.
- A TB test certificate, because Nigeria is on the Home Office list.
- No partner or children joining you, unless a child is born in the UK.
- Pay that meets £41,700, using guaranteed basic pay and counting at most 48 hours a week.
The government costs for one person applying from Nigeria on a three-year certificate come to £3,924. That is the £819 visa fee plus three years of the £1,035 health surcharge. For a five-year certificate it is £6,793. You may also need to show £1,270 in savings for 28 days, unless the employer certifies it will cover that.
Your trade certificate is not a visa test. The rules do not set a fixed qualification for mechanics, but a sponsor can ask for proof of skills.
6. After 2026: settlement is also changing
Today the settlement route for a Skilled Worker is five years. On 2 November 2026 the government announced earned settlement. The default is ten years. Five years applies at £50,271 or more, and three years at £125,141 or more.
My own arithmetic: a mechanic paid around £41,700 would fall on the ten-year default. That is an illustration, not an official ruling for mechanics. The start date has not been stated, and the Immigration Rules still have to be changed. For official detail, read the government response.
Settlement will also need B2 English, the Life in the UK test, no criminal record and no unpaid government debt. If you plan a long stay, work out whether you can live and work in the UK for ten years before you pay anything.
7. What to do now
If you still want to try, act in this order.
- Check the employer on the official register of licensed sponsors. It needs an A rating for the Skilled Worker route. Being listed does not prove a job is real.
- Ask for the job title and the occupation code. It must be vehicle technicians, mechanics and electricians (5231), and the salary must meet the floor.
- Take an approved English test, and book the TB test once a certificate is near.
- Read the official Skilled Worker pages and the immigration rules for the route yourself.
- Talk to a regulated adviser about your case. Our guide to UK immigration lawyers, their fees and how to choose one explains what to look for.
Other routes need honesty too. The Youth Mobility Scheme does not include Nigeria. The High Potential Individual visa is for graduates of listed universities, not mechanics. Related trades such as electricians, welders and pipe fitters were recommended for 2027 shortage-list access, but that is advice, not law.
If your trade is different, see our overview of UK shortage occupation jobs and routes to settlement. Our list of UK visa sponsorship jobs paying £43,000 and above covers other sectors.
Not legal advice: this article explains public rules. For your own case, use the official gov.uk pages and an adviser regulated by the OISC or the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
8. Scam red flags, with what to do about each
A closing deadline helps scammers, because it makes people rush. The Home Office says a genuine employer would never ask for payment to secure a visa, and it never guarantees a job. A recent official case involved a fake recruiter that took upfront fees from workers, including Nigerians, and filed no visa applications.
| Red flag | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fee for a “CoS” or “sponsorship” | Employers pay the licence fee, certificate fee and skills charge | Do not pay. Walk away |
| Guaranteed visa or job | The Home Office never guarantees a job | Treat as a scam |
| Offer you never applied for | Unsolicited contact is a known warning sign | Check the employer yourself |
| Money to a personal account, cash or vouchers | Visa fees are paid online on gov.uk | Stop and report it |
| Employer not on the register | No licence means no certificate | Search the register by name |
| £48,000 with “no experience needed” | Pay and skill do not match | Ask for basic pay in writing |
| Free email address for visa messages | Official Home Office emails end @homeoffice.gov.uk | Do not reply |
You do pay some costs yourself: the visa fee, the health surcharge, your English and TB tests, and travel. Those go to the government or test centre, never to an agent for “sponsorship”. Read the Home Office guidance on fraud and scams, and forward suspect emails to report@phishing.gov.uk.
9. Frequently asked questions
Can I still get a mechanic visa in 2026?
Only if an employer with a licence issues you a certificate before 31 December 2026 for a role that fits the rules. As of 4 November 2026, that is a narrow window.
Will mechanic sponsorship definitely end on 1 January 2027?
It is expected, not announced. The advisory committee recommended no access for mechanics, but the Home Office decides. We found no decision as of 4 November 2026.
Is £48,000 the minimum salary for the visa?
No. The minimum for a new hire is £41,700, or £33,400 for a new entrant. £48,000 is an employer figure above both.
Can I bring my wife and children?
A new overseas mechanic cannot, except a child born in the UK. The limit has applied since 22 July 2025.
Does my Nigerian experience count?
The visa rules set no fixed trade qualification for mechanics. The employer and the decision maker may still ask about your skills and experience, so keep records of your work.
Will I get settlement after five years?
Not necessarily. Five years is the rule today, but the earned settlement plan announced on 2 November 2026 sets ten years as the default. For its start date, see the earned settlement response.
Where is the advice on mechanics published?
The advice is in the Migration Advisory Committee shortage list report of 23 July 2026. It said mechanics met the shortage test but failed on fit with the Industrial Strategy.
