If you live in Nigeria, most well-known US business accounts will not open for you. Mercury lists Nigeria as a prohibited country by owner residence, Relay blocks owners who hold Nigerian citizenship or residence, and Wise does not issue USD account details with a Nigeria address. This comparison sets out each provider’s own rules, fees and deposit wording for a business bank account for non us residents, as published in October 2026. Before you pay any formation fee, read each provider’s current prohibited-countries page.
Last checked against official sources: October 2026.
1. The Criteria Behind This Comparison
This is a comparison, not a ranking. Where you and your co-owners live matters more than any fee, so no provider can honestly be called the best for everyone. Each option below faces the same seven checks, taken from the providers’ own published pages, which were read on 20 October 2026 or taken from archived copies dated between June and October 2026.
- Country test: your country of residence, and for Relay your citizenship, must not be on the provider’s prohibited list.
- Entity test: the provider must accept a US-registered LLC with an IRS EIN.
- Documents: passport, EIN document, formation document and proof of where you live.
- Cost: monthly fee, wire fees, currency conversion and any set-up fee.
- Deposit protection: money held at a bank with FDIC wording, or funds “safeguarded” at a payments company.
- Industry: your business type must not be on the decline list.
- Timelines: the decision time the provider states.
The country test comes first because it ends the search for many readers. A low fee means nothing if the provider cannot accept you.
2. Business Bank Account for Non-US Residents: Country Rules First
The three most-recommended US options use three different tests. Mercury looks at where an owner lives, not at citizenship. Relay checks citizenship and residence of every named owner, and Wise checks profile addresses.
| Provider | What the rule tests | Nigeria status | Source read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | Owner’s country of residence | On the prohibited list | Help page, archived copy, 2026 |
| Relay | Citizenship or residence of any owner | On the prohibited list | Page updated 11 Aug 2026 |
| Wise Business (USD details) | Address of the US business or owner profile | USD details unavailable with a Nigeria address | Help page, 20 Oct 2026 |
| Bluevine | Owner’s residence in a supported country | Not on the supported list | Archived copy, 16 Oct 2026 |
| Revolut Business (US) | Applicant’s country of residence | Not on the eligible list | Archived copy, 23 Jun 2026 |
| Airwallex | Country where the business is registered | Not an eligible country (the US is) | Help page, 20 Oct 2026 |
Important Note: A founder who lives in Nigeria is not eligible for Mercury, Relay or Wise USD account details under the providers’ published rules in October 2026. Relay says its list can change without notice. Read the live page before you spend money on an LLC.
Relay has a second, separate rule. It cannot enable international wire services if any beneficial owner holds citizenship in a long list of countries that includes Nigeria (page updated 11 August 2026).
Wise can still send money to Nigeria in naira, which is a different thing from holding USD account details. A Nigerian citizen living in an allowed country fares differently: Mercury says such a person may still be eligible, pending review, while Relay blocks on citizenship alone.
3. Mercury, Relay and Wise Compared on Cost and Deposit Protection
These three are often called US bank accounts, yet none is a bank in its own name. Mercury and Relay are fintechs that work with partner banks. Wise says it is a money-transfer company and that its accounts are not FDIC insured. The table shows what each says about itself, from pricing pages read on 20 October 2026 and Relay help pages updated 11 August 2026.
| Item | Mercury | Relay | Wise Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Fintech; partner banks Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., both Members FDIC | Fintech; banking by Thread Bank, Member FDIC | Money-transfer company, not a bank |
| Deposit wording | “Up to $5M in FDIC insurance” through partner banks and sweep networks | Up to $3,000,000 through Thread Bank’s sweep programme; conditions apply | Funds “safeguarded”; FDIC pass-through up to $250,000 only if you opt in to the interest feature |
| Plan price | $0 base; $29.90 Plus; $299 Pro per month | $0 Starter; $30 Grow; $120 Scale (shown at $90 for a limited time) per month | One-time $31 set-up fee |
| Receiving USD by wire | Incoming international USD fee not listed | $5 on the Starter overview; other Relay pages say free | $6.11 per wire or SWIFT payment; ACH free |
| Currency costs | 1% on non-USD wires; 3% on non-USD card payments | Not compared here | Conversion from 0.23%, varies by currency |
| Decision time | Usually 0 to 2 business days | Most within one business day | Verification up to 10 working days |
Pro Tip: Relay’s own pages disagree on whether an incoming wire costs $5 or nothing, and intermediary banks may take their own cut on SWIFT wires. Ask any provider for its current fee in writing before you rely on a figure.
A worked example shows how small differences add up. Receive 1,000 USD by ACH at Wise Business and the fee is zero. Receive it by wire and the fee is 6.11 USD, so 993.89 USD arrives before any sender or intermediary charges. A 1,000 EUR wire into Mercury carries a 1% conversion fee, about 10 EUR.
4. Other Providers and What Their Pages Say
Bluevine banks through Coastal Community Bank, Member FDIC. It accepts international owners of a US LLC or corporation with an EIN and a passport, no SSN needed, but only if the owner lives in one of 25 listed countries, from Australia and Canada to Singapore and the United Kingdom. Nigeria is not among them, and an on-camera identity check is required (archived copy, 16 October 2026).
Revolut Business in the US asks for a US-registered company with proof of US physical presence, and an applicant who lives in a listed country. Those include the UK, the US, Canada, India, Singapore, the UAE and most of the EEA, but not Nigeria (archived copy, 23 June 2026). People in unsupported countries can join a waiting list.
Brex says only US-registered companies may open an account. Novo’s help pages say it currently takes only owners who live in the US and hold an SSN. Airwallex onboards by the country where the business is registered, so ask it directly how it treats non-resident owners of a US company.
5. Choosing a Business Bank Account for Non-US Residents by Situation
Because the country tests differ, start from your own situation, not a league table. The table shows which published rules to read first. It names no winner and promises no approval.
| Your situation | Rules to read first | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Owner lives in Nigeria | None of the accounts above lists Nigeria as eligible; see section 6 | Paying formation fees on the hope of an exception |
| Nigerian citizen living in a country outside Mercury’s list | Mercury (residence test, pending review) | Relay blocks on Nigerian citizenship |
| Owner of another nationality, living in a country on neither Mercury’s nor Relay’s list | Mercury and Relay | Passport, address and industry rules |
| Owner lives in a country on Bluevine’s list | Bluevine | On-camera ID check |
| Owner lives in a Revolut-eligible country | Revolut Business (US) | Proof of US physical presence |
| You mainly need to receive USD and your country is supported | Wise Business | It is not a bank account in your name |
Your industry can also end the matter. Mercury and Relay both decline money services businesses, crypto exchanges, adult entertainment, cannabis and gambling.
Missing or wrong documents are the usual cause of rejection that Mercury names on its own pages. It also says it cannot disclose the reason for a specific denial.
6. What Nigeria-Based Founders Can Verify Instead
If you live in Nigeria, the question changes from which US account to open to which routes your own country supports. Stripe’s global page lists Nigeria as an “extended network” country with a link to Paystack, and says Nigeria is not a direct sign-up (read 20 October 2026). Paystack lets Nigerian businesses take international card payments, and USD payments with USD payout need a Zenith Bank USD domiciliary account.
Paystack’s fees on its page that day were 3.9% plus NGN 100 for naira cards and 3.9% for USD payments. It excludes crypto, betting, real estate, lending and lotteries.
Quick Answer: Can a founder living in Nigeria open Mercury, Relay or a Wise USD account? Not under the providers’ published rules in October 2026. Verify Paystack, Payoneer and a local domiciliary account instead.
Payoneer lists 190+ countries and territories, with fees dated 1 January 2026: receiving into a non-local-currency account costs 1% (minimum 1 USD). Whether Nigerian users can hold a USD receiving account, and what a withdrawal costs, should be confirmed on Payoneer’s own page. It announced a Kuda Bank partnership in about August 2025 for CAC-registered businesses to withdraw in naira.
The CBN Foreign Exchange Manual (4th edition, 2026) is reported to give ordinary domiciliary account holders unrestricted access to funds, with cash deposits capped at USD 10,000 a day. Whether a Nigeria resident may or may not own a US company is a legal question this article does not answer. Ask a Nigerian lawyer, your bank and a tax adviser before forming one.

7. What to Have Ready Before You Apply
Every US account in this article needs a company registered in the US and an EIN; none accepts a company formed abroad. Foreign owners can get an EIN without an SSN or ITIN, but not online. The IRS EIN is free, and the steps below follow the order most applicants meet them.
- Check your country, and your co-owners’ citizenship, against the provider’s live prohibited-countries page.
- Form the LLC with a registered agent who has a physical address in the state.
- Request the EIN from the IRS by phone, fax or mail, writing “foreign” on Form SS-4 line 7b if you have no SSN or ITIN. Fax takes about 4 business days and mail about 4 weeks.
- Gather the formation document, the IRS EIN document (CP 575, 147c or the IRS-returned SS-4) and your passport.
- Prepare a real operating address and a real home address, as Mercury rejects registered-agent, PO box and virtual addresses for these roles.
- Apply, then allow for the review time the provider states.
State costs differ, and they changed in 2026. The table compares the two states most founders consider, with the dates the sources give.
| Item | Wyoming | Delaware |
|---|---|---|
| Formation filing | $100 (schedule effective 1 Jul 2026) | $90 on the form dated 26 Aug 2026; fees rose from 1 Aug 2026, so confirm |
| Yearly state charge | Greater of $60 or 0.0002 of Wyoming assets | $400 LLC tax, due 1 June |
| Annual report | Due the first day of the anniversary month | None for LLCs |
| Registered agent | Required, physical address | Required on the certificate |
A first-year Wyoming state bill is $100 plus the $60 minimum, or $160, before the agent. Agent prices on providers’ own pages: Stripe Atlas $100 a year after year one, Firstbase $299 per state per year, and Doola includes one in a $297-a-year plan. These services do not remove the bank’s country rules.
8. After You Open: Filings, BOI and Scam Fees
A foreign-owned single-member LLC has no income tax return of its own, but it must file a pro forma Form 1120 with Form 5472 attached when it has reportable transactions with its owner. Foreign-owned entities cannot e-file this form; it goes by fax or mail. For a calendar-year entity the usual due date is 15 April, extendable with Form 7004.
Key Statistic: The IRS penalty for a missed or substantially incomplete Form 5472 is $25,000, plus $25,000 for each 30-day period that continues more than 90 days after an IRS notice (Instructions, Rev. 12/2024).
Whether a transaction is reportable depends on your facts, such as owner payments or capital contributions. Ask a qualified adviser, who can also tell you what US tax a foreign owner owes.
The beneficial ownership report is a different matter. FinCEN’s final rule took effect on 14 August 2026, and companies formed in the US, including foreign-owned LLCs, no longer file. Only entities formed under foreign law and registered in a US state still report.
Scams cluster around this process. The IRS charges nothing for an EIN, and the FTC warned in April 2025 about lookalike sites charging up to $300. Anyone who promises guaranteed Mercury or Relay approval for a Nigeria-resident owner contradicts the providers’ published rules, and so does anyone selling a “verified” account.
9. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I open a business bank account for non-US residents if I live in Nigeria?
Not at Mercury, Relay or Wise USD account details, based on their published rules in October 2026. Bluevine and Revolut Business do not list Nigeria either. Check the live pages, because lists change.
Does Mercury accept Nigerian citizens living abroad?
Mercury’s test is residence, not citizenship. A citizen of a listed country who lives elsewhere “may still be eligible, pending application review”. Relay differs: Nigerian citizenship alone blocks an application.
Is Wise a US bank account?
No. Wise says it is not a bank, and your balance is held by Wise. The USD account details are payment details that let senders pay you by ACH or wire.
Can I apply for an EIN online from outside the US?
The IRS says the online application cannot be used when there is no US residence or principal place of business. Use phone, fax or mail with Form SS-4. The phone line is for international applicants only.
Do I still need to file a BOI report in 2026?
Under FinCEN’s final rule effective 14 August 2026, US-formed companies are exempt. A Wyoming or Delaware LLC is formed under state law, so it is not a reporting company. A demand for a BOI fee on such a company is likely wrong.
How long does approval take?
Mercury says usually 0 to 2 business days, and Relay says most decisions come within one business day. Wise verification can take up to 10 working days. None guarantees approval, and Mercury says it cannot disclose denial reasons.
10. Next Steps
Start with the country test, not the LLC. Open the live prohibited-countries pages from Mercury, Relay and Wise, and write down what each says about your residence and citizenship. If you live in Nigeria, talk to a qualified adviser about the routes in section 6 before you pay anyone.
